Player-versus-Player is a special mode of the game wherein players enter confined arenas and compete in short matches against other players in their level bracket. Players can gain resources, artifacts, and troons based on their performance.
Players click the green "Play PvP" button to the right of the mini-map to activate PvP mode, and when enough players in a given level bracket have done so, a match begins.
Play style, weapon efficacy, and ship builds are often very different than those used in the normal, player-versus-environment ("PvE") mode. Resistance is capped at 50% instead of 75%, and certain weapons have their damage reduced to promote game balance.
PvP-style combat between players is also enabled when in a Hostile system, provided the players are not in the same group. This has led to colloquially (but inaccurately) referring to Friendly and Hostile systems as "PvE" and "PvP" respectively for the sake of brevity.
Matches come in two flavors: Deathmatch and Domination.
Deathmatch is free-for-all combat that continues until one player amasses 20 kills or the match time runs out. Players gain rewards based on how many kills they accrue.
Domination is a territory-control competition. Players are divided into two groups (red and blue) that attempt to capture various stations. Maintaining control of a station earns that team points over time. The first team to reach 1,000 points wins. Players gain rewards based on both their combat and their territory-claiming performance.
